12 Dec Costs pressures on hauliers
There has been mixed news on costs for hauliers (and therefore their customers) in recent weeks. Whilst George Osbornes announcement tthat the planned 3p per litre rise in fuel tax would not proceed in January avoids this additional cost, the new levy proposed for HGV’s using UK roads continues to move towards the statute book.
The legislation has broad political support, and whilst being tax neutral for UK haulier who can offset additional fees against Vehicle Excise Duty, it will result in higher costs for non-UK businesses. These road user charges will be subject to the Eurovignette Directive, which specifies a current maximum daily charge of €11 rising to €12 in 2014 which equates to £10 a day. The driver will be legally responsible for ensuring that the vehicle that they are driving is covered, failure to do so will incur penalties and fines.
For exporters who take advantage of backhaul capacity provided by non UK hauliers, this could add c. 3-5% to costs. Supplychain21 specialises in sourcing such export capacity through a network of partners and will be looking to minimise the impact for its customers when the new legislation takes effect.
